A few days ago the FAA warned that airline passengers should not turn on or charge their Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones while flying because of concerns about the devices catching fire. A few days later several airlines banned passengers from using the smartphones during flights and prohibited the phones from being checked in stowed baggage. Despite the ban, most people say it is almost impossible to enforce. Knowing this some airlines say that travelers are on the honor system in determining if they should use their phones.
Priceline’s “Name your own price” program heads for the graveyard as full airplanes kill the model –
Priceline almost 20 years ago launched the revolutionary “Name your own price’ model to help customers find cheaper airline seats and help airlines fill empty seats. The “Name your own price” program allowed travelers to post the maximum they would pay for a ticket between two cities not knowing the schedule of flights or airline flown. This worked well when the airlines had almost 35% of their seats go empty 2 decades ago. However, when the airlines consolidated and removed all the excess capacity from the system they no longer had extra seats to sell for low, low prices. My oh my how things have changed.
Sadly, half of Americans took little to no summer vacation this year –
A recent survey of 2000 Americans asked “How many days of vacation did you take this summer?” 33.5% said they took either one or two weeks vacation, 48.4% said that they had taken either no vacation (37.4%) or 1-3 days (11%). The main reason people had no summer vacation plans was that they were either too busy or couldn’t afford a vacation.
International travel grows whopping 7% in July as low airfares successful in putting butts in seats –
Low fuel prices and amazingly low international airfares this summer have caused a massive wave of travelers to take advantage of these low low prices. I have seen low prices for international travel to Europe at levels I had not seen for the last 10 years. Roundtrip prices from the Midwest to Europe ran as low as $525 roundtrip for travel this summer and fall. This is a textbook case of supply and demand. The lower prices go the more people decide to take advantage of great deals.
