The massive annual wave of spring break travelers is about to hit airports around the country this week. This means security lines will be extra-long, parking lots full and patience will be in short supply. If you are traveling during the next 5 weeks you will want to arrive at the airport extra early, especially if you do not have a TSA PreCheck that allows you express access through the security lines.
Airline frequent flyer programs reach tipping point as majority say they are hard if not impossible to use-
Executive Travel weekly travel alert survey of business travelers asked, “How would you rate the ability to redeem your airline frequent flyer miles for free tickets?” Of the 725 surveyed only 9% said that redeeming miles was extremely easy (2%) or easy (7%) while 57% said that redeeming airline miles was extremely difficult (43%) or impossible (14%). I think the airlines have killed the goose that lays the golden egg. Making the redemption of frequent flyer miles extremely difficult has taken what is supposed to be an incentive and turned it into something that discourages the airlines’ best customers. Just when we thought it could not get any worse the airlines announce they are taking away even more perks from budget travelers –
This last week was a doozy for consumers when they learned that both United and American Airlines were going to follow the lead of Delta and launch ultra-budget fares later this year. These new fares will be the lowest prices offered to travelers but they will basically strip away all of the typical bennies and perks of frequent travelers, such as the ability to upgrade seats and even remove the ability to make a seat assignment. It just seems that the airlines are determined to try to make their customers feel abused. If they keep this up I think you will soon see people echoing the speech of the 1975 movie “Network” by yelling, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” CLICK HERE to watch that speech.
Keep your fingers crossed that the merger of Marriott and Starwood will be shanghaied –
The giant merger of Marriott and Starwood (Westin, St. Regis, Sheraton) is just weeks away from being approved and a monkey wrench was just thrown into the mix. Seems a giant Asian hotel investment group wants to put up cash to buy Starwood instead of Marriott. Believe me the merger of Marriott and Starwood would be the worst thing ever for consumers. Please keep your fingers crossed that our friends in Asia can rescue us from this disaster.
