After a three year battle the Department of Transportation finally approved Norwegian Air to fly to the U.S. from Ireland. Norwegian Air is a low-cost airline who is promising to launch service to Boston and New York in 2017. They are known for their unbelievably low airfares. Experts say they will launch with $99 one-way fares to the United States soon. This could be the launch of low fares across the European continent from the U.S. as once you get to Ireland on Norwegian Airlines you can connect to many cities in Europe on Ryanair for as low as $29. But be careful as all these low fare airlines in Europe will often charge you as much for luggage and seat assignments as you pay for your ticket.
Online Booking Is, Like, So ’90s: The Humble Travel Agent Is Making a Comeback –
The travel agent is back! NBC News recently had a great article on how people are saving time and money using a travel agent to make their travel plans easy and fun. Turns out not everyone has an extra 20 hours to do research on their next trip. And some people are starting to realize that anyone can say anything on the internet and often time that great deal is a steal (but only stolen from you). CLICK HERE to read the article the written by Harriot Baskas for NBC News. (Also a big thank you to Nancy Taylor for sharing with me).
Are all these claims by airlines of improved service actually proving to be just the opposite? –
Recently we had a group of 40 people flying back from New York City to Omaha connecting through Atlanta. Unfortunately the flight from New York was about 45 minutes late causing the connecting flight to be departing only 20 minutes after the NY flight arrived. 3 of the 40 people were not able to run to the departing flight and arrived just 30 seconds after the gate was closed causing them to sleep in the airport and catch a flight to Omaha the next day. Can you imagine an airline that is so focused on hitting their on-time departure targets that they will not even delay departure for 30 seconds to allow passengers to make their connecting flights? The next time an airline brags about their on-time arrival and departure percentages it will only make me think of the hundreds if not thousands of passengers they left stranded only so they can hit their fictitious numbers.
The stampede by airlines flying to Cuba is quickly making a U-turn –
American Airlines and several other airlines just months ago announced they were putting in dozens of new flights to Cuba. Just last week several airlines announced they are pulling back on some flights as they do not see the anticipated demand has materialized. We are seeing strong interest in Cuba but when some people understand that traveling to Cuba is still very much a third world country with very limited hotels and tourism infrastructure they decide to spend their money on the four and five star luxury at hundreds of Caribbean islands and resorts instead.
United launches Polaris Business Class this week –
United’s new Polaris Business Class launched with great fanfare on December 1. This was a major upgrade for United as they changed everything from napkins, to silverware, plates, stemware, table cloths, food menus, blankets and mattress pads as well as even slippers and pajamas. And with all the jokes about airline food United decided to go all in and completely overhauled it’s food. United says it created 96 new appetizers, 48 new salads, and 240 new entrees. The only disappointment for many will be that the new business class seats will not be installed on all aircrafts for several months as they have hundreds of planes they will need to retrofit with the new seats. I can’t wait to try the new service on for size. CLICK HERE to take a peek at United’s new Polaris Business Class service.
