Delta is going high tech tracking your luggage –

Posted on

Delta Air Lines will be the first airline to begin deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) baggage tracking technology. For the last three decades airlines have used bar codes to track your luggage. RFID uses radio waves to track your luggage that Delta will apply a RFID chip in the luggage tag. The real cool part is that you will be able to track your luggage on the Delta app and know where it is all the time. This new service should be implemented in the 4th quarter of this year.

I recommend never check-on luggage anymore –

As many of you know I travel a lot. My best advice is to always take only carry-on luggage and never check-in luggage. Life is so much easier and less stressful when traveling knowing that you never have to worry about your luggage showing up at your destination. It seems like every time I violate my carry-on only rule I come to regret it as my baggage is always late or lost. You can easily pack a week of clothing in a piece of carry-on luggage. If you are staying longer than a week there is always a laundry close by the hotel that can launder your cloths for often less than the cost to check-in that jumbo luggage set. Carry-on luggage also saves you an extra 45 minutes on most trips as you don’t have to wait for your luggage at the baggage claim carousel. Next time you travel leave that jumbo bag at home and think carry-on only.

Travel Myth: Marriott owns thousands of hotels –

The giant hotel management company has about 4500 hotels in its portfolio but if you look under the covers you will see that in fact it owns less than 10 hotels and the rest are just management agreements. Marriott makes its money by managing hotels not by owning the real estate.

Hotel prices for Olympics in Rio should come crashing down in a few weeks –

For the last 3 decades I have watched Olympic fever from hotels in the host city as they jack up their prices 3 or 4 times normal rates and add 7, 10 and even 14 day minimum stays during the Olympics to cash in on their good fortune. Usually what happens is that when the games get near hotels come to the realization that the demand does not equal the supply and prices drop like a rock a couple of weeks before the big show. You can still find RT airfares from Omaha to Rio for as low as $1100 during the Olympics. If you have seeing the summer Olympics on your bucket list just wait a few more weeks and I think you will be able to find a great package of airfare and hotel at a very reasonable price.

Last minute Mediterranean cruises are as low as $499 pp –

There are some amazing prices for cruising the Med this summer as cruise lines still appear to have a lot of empty cabins on select cruises. I found one from Rome to Athens departing June 4 with the amazing low price of $499 pp (not including taxes, fees and airfare). Add another $50 and you can get a balcony. Business travelers like Southwest Airlines’ no change fees –

Southwest Airlines is making a big new push to try to recruit more business travelers to fly the airline best known for vacation travelers. All the major airlines today except Southwest charge a $200 fee to change a non-refundable ticket. This is a giant selling point to many business travelers who have to change their schedule multiple times before or during the trip. Ironically the airline (Southwest) known as the low-fare airline has some of the highest airfares around. The good news is you get great flexibility with Southwest. The bad news is you will probably pay a higher price than what the other airlines will charge if you don’t need that flexibility.
