Is there a new $15 credit card fee on the horizon with the airlines?

Posted on

With fuel prices heading north and airline profits shrinking are we on the verge of a new $15 airline fee for using credit cards? For years I have been predicting that the airlines would someday charge a fee for using a credit card to purchase an airline ticket. After all they pay the credit card companies an estimated 3% fee for you to use your credit card to pay for your ticket. Airline revenues in 2016 were approximately $700 Billion. That means they paid the banks about $21 Billion in credit card fees. WOW! So you do the math of how many billions of dollars they could add to their bottom line by adding a $15 per ticket fee for a credit card convenience fee. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that someday this will be the next fee added to the airline’s Christmas tree of fees.

Delta, United and American all launch “NO” fares –

Last week American and United Airlines joined Delta in offering their new fares they call “Basic Economy” fares which they claim allow travelers to save about $20 compared to the lowest priced tickets. I call these fares “NO” fares as when you buy these tickets you get NO refunds, NO changes, NO upgrades, NO standbys, NO carryons, NO overhead storage, NO advance seat assignments. These 3 major airlines say they are introducing these “no-frills” airfares so they can compete with the low-cost airlines like Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant. I don’t understand why the Big 3 airlines have spent billions of dollars the last 5 years to improve their service levels to try to be the very best and now they want to dive to the bottom and try to be everything to everybody. This also just adds so much more complexity to the ticket buying process.

We answered the phone in an amazing 7 seconds in February –

I am so proud of our team as one of our core values is a commitment to “urgency”. We understand that one of the biggest frustrations customers are having is to wait on hold to talk to a real person. Executive Travel takes this very seriously and we have made it our goal to answer the phones with a live person in 9 seconds or less. In February we averaged an amazing 7 seconds on-hold time. WOW! I like to think of Executive Travel as the fastest travel management company on earth. American Airlines is really coming on strong with new planes and a new commitment to service –

I have been most impressed with the progress that has been made by American Airlines the last two years. They say that even though they are the biggest airline in the world they are committed to being the best. American has been adding one new airplane a week to their fleet and they have made major commitments to upgrading not only their fleet but all levels of service, from food to uniforms. Three cheers for American. I like their attitude.
