Airlines and Hotels are Playing AI Games With Prices—and Frequent Travelers Are Starting to Go Underground – Airlines and hotels are quietly using AI to get much smarter—and sneakier—about pricing. When Delta Air Lines disclosed it was using AI pricing tools like Fetcherr, it raised eyebrows across the industry and in Washington. While carriers say AI isn’t targeting individual travelers, it is constantly adjusting prices based on demand, timing, inventory pressure, and booking behavior. Here’s where it gets real. Just recently, my son Paul booked a hotel for a meeting in Omaha. His friends—elite loyalty members at the same hotel—went directly to the hotel’s website expecting a better deal. Instead, they paid $100 more for the exact same room, same night, same hotel. Loyalty didn’t save them; it cost them. That’s why seasoned travelers are starting to “search underground”—using corporate rates, trusted travel advisors, alternate channels, and even picking up the phone. AI may be optimizing revenue, but it’s also eroding trust. When loyal customers consistently pay more than savvy shoppers, don’t be surprised when travelers start looking for ways around the algorithm.

United vs. American Declare War at Chicago O’Hare – Chicago O’Hare International Airport has become the center of an aggressive turf battle between United Airlines and American Airlines. After the city reallocated five gates from American to United, both carriers began rapidly adding flights to protect their gate counts. United plans up to 750 daily departures this summer—its largest O’Hare schedule ever—while American is targeting 500+ daily departures in 2026 after announcing more than 100 new daily flights. Both CEOs have made it clear: neither airline is backing down. Here is the bottom line for travelers: More flights, more destinations, and stronger competition. The downside? Increased congestion and pressure on on-time performance at one of the nation’s busiest airports. Great choice and availability—but plan extra time at O’Hare.

I Now Recommend a Minimum Two-Hour Connecting Time at Major Hub Airports – Airlines keep adding flights like runways grow on trees—but they don’t. Major hub airports are hitting real limits, and places like Chicago, Dallas, and New York are feeling the strain. On paper, travelers see more choices; in reality, flights are stacked tightly together, creating fragile connections with almost no margin for error. When weather sneezes, the system catches pneumonia. One late inbound or a backed-up taxiway can unravel an entire day of travel. That’s why I now recommend a minimum two-hour connection at major hubs—not to be cautious, but to protect your trip. The schedule looks great—until it doesn’t, and that extra time can save you from a long night at the airport.

Refundable Fares Are Backfiring on Airlines (and You’re Paying for It) – Airlines figured out a long time ago that travelers love refundable tickets—so they priced that flexibility at a premium. What they didn’t fully anticipate was just how aggressively customers would game the system by booking fully refundable fares far in advance, then canceling and rebooking cheaper non-refundable tickets closer to departure. Cancellation rates on refundable fares have spiked, and airlines are paying close attention. The response has been swift and predictable. Carriers are widening the price gap between refundable and non-refundable fares and quietly tightening change rules wherever they can. In some markets, refundable tickets now cost hundreds more for the exact same seat. Travelers still have flexibility, but it’s getting more expensive by the month. Flexibility isn’t disappearing—it’s just no longer on sale, and airlines are making sure you feel the difference at checkout.

Airport Parking Can Now Cost More Than Your Airline Ticket – Here’s a fun little shocker: travelers are running into more often: airport parking can now cost more than the flight itself. At major hubs like Chicago O’Hare International Airport, daily parking rates can quietly pile up to hundreds of dollars for a week-long trip—especially in covered or terminal-adjacent garages. Meanwhile, airlines are running competitive fares that sometimes undercut the cost of leaving your car behind. Airports know travelers value convenience, and they’re pricing it accordingly. Add peak travel demand, limited garage capacity, and fewer off-airport lots than in years past, and parking has become a real profit center. Many travelers don’t notice until they return home and do the math. The new travel reality: before you celebrate a cheap airfare, check the parking bill. It might be the most expensive leg of your trip.
