Travel industry experts are scratching their heads this summer. After three years of post-COVID revenge travel and sky-high demand, the summer of 2025 has thrown a surprising curveball—global travel is slumping.
Airfares to Europe are down nearly 50% from the same time last year – Flights to Hawaii are cheaper than we’ve seen in years. And even Las Vegas—long considered recession-proof—is reporting double-digit drops in visitor numbers. So what’s going on?
Hotels in Las Vegas are so slow this summer some are even waiving resort fees – Believe it or not I have even seen the return of $49 a night midweek hotel rates and $99 weekend rates.
Hawaii is also seeing some amazing airfares – Last week Hawaiian Air was offering one way fares from the west coast for less than $200. Other airlines are starting to reduce capacity to the islands
The Tsunami of Fall Travel is about to hit – this might just be the calm before the storm. Several major airlines have reported strong bookings for September through November, especially for international travel. And the early data is showing that fall travel may bounce back with a vengeance. Consumers seem to be delaying summer vacations and taking advantage of shoulder-season deals instead.
What this means for travelers:
• Now is the time to book: If you’ve been waiting for airfares to drop, congratulations—your moment has arrived.
• Europe in September is a steal: Flights are cheap, crowds are thinner, and the weather is ideal.
• Book early for fall: If you’re planning a getaway in October or November, don’t wait—airlines are already raising prices as demand rebounds.
• Loyalty points go further: With lower fares, your frequent flyer miles may stretch a lot further right now.
