Steve’s Sneak Peek at 2026 Travel Predictions – Every January, I release my annual list of 60 travel predictions, and 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most transformative years I’ve ever forecasted. AI disruption, loyalty program upheavals, new fees, new freedoms, and a few “I can’t believe that actually happened” moments will define the year ahead. Below is your exclusive early look at 10 quick hits—a taste of what’s coming in my full list. I also decided to add a little Babylon Bee flavor to these predictions (without the politics)
Top 10 Crystal Ball Predictions for 2026 – Now With 37% More Sarcasm and 0% More Legroom
1. Airlines Decide Loyalty Is Overrated – One major airline will announce a loyalty overhaul so extreme that elite travelers will receive a commemorative “Thanks for Playing” certificate and a coupon for 3% off a middle seat.
Translation: Expect major elite benefit cuts and tougher qualification rules—loyalty programs will become less rewarding and more expensive. This is the year of the free agent as heavy travelers become unyoked to one airline and now look for best value, pricing and direct flights.
2. Business Class Prices Reach Mars — And Then Return to Earth – Airlines will raise business fares to stunning new heights before realizing only billionaires and their emotional support accountants can afford them.
Translation: Business-class fares will spike early in 2026 but will finally drop after corporate customers push back. The busy summer travel season will see people pushing summer travel to Europe into the spring and fall shoulder seasons to avoid the crowds, heat and high prices.
3. TSA Introduces “Super PreCheck”: The Lane for People Who Have Truly Given Up – This new lane allows shoes, coats, laptops, liquids, and dignity to stay fully intact. The catch? It costs more than your car.
Translation: Expect a new ultra-premium screening tier—faster lines, higher fees, and more stratification in airport security. Sometimes the TSA line is longer than the regular lines. Look for Super PreCheck for faster, easier security check.
4. Hotels Invent Exciting New Ways to Charge You for Existing – Expect fees like the “Standing in the Lobby Fee,” the “Thinking About Using the Pool Fee,” and the highly controversial “Breathing the Hotel’s Air Fee.”
Translation: Hotels will expand add-on fees and micro-charges, making total stay costs much higher than advertised prices. As hotel price inflation moderates, they will look at all types of new sources of income.
5. Layover Vacations Become Mandatory – Airlines will start offering “fun” 36-hour layovers in cities you’ve never wanted to see. Miss a connection? Congratulations—you just unlocked a complimentary architecture tour.
Translation: Stopover programs will surge as airlines use layovers to generate extra revenue and sell curated mini-experiences. Turkish Airlines has been doing this for years and people love a one or two-day stopover in Istanbul.
6. Carry-On Enforcement Becomes a Blood Sport – Gate agents will use laser-guided measuring devices to determine if your bag is even thinking about being too large. Violators will be publicly shamed and forced to check their luggage into oblivion.
Translation: Airlines will aggressively enforce carry-on size rules, pushing more passengers into paying for checked bags. I must admit I am the biggest violator of carry-on rules. I will keep pushing until they tell me to stop.
7. Free Wi-Fi Arrives, But Expect Ads Every 14 Seconds – Sure, the Wi-Fi is free—but you’ll watch so many commercials you’ll land with a PhD in shampoo branding.
Translation: Free in-flight Wi-Fi becomes widespread, but ad-supported models will make the experience less peaceful. The good news is that not only will there be free Wi-Fi but it will be much faster.
8. Adults-Only Cruise Line Sells Out in 9 Minutes – Parents everywhere will ask, “Wait… we could’ve been doing kid-free vacations this whole time?”
Translation: Cruise lines will expand adults-only offerings as demand for quiet, kid-free vacations reaches new highs. If Baby Boomers are not taking their family on a cruise they really don’t want to be around kids.
9. Private Drivers Become the New Travel Flex – In 2026, nothing says “I’m doing well” like stepping out of a black Mercedes van while whispering, “I haven’t touched a rental car key in three years.”
Translation: Chauffeur-driven, small-group travel will explode in popularity as travelers seek convenience, comfort, and personalization. Wait until you see our ground-breaking private-driver, all-inclusive Italy tour that will launch later this month.
10. A Tech Outage Will Bring Global Travel to a Screeching Halt – One random Tuesday, all airline systems will shut down. Airports descend into chaos. Travelers rediscover ancient survival skills like “speaking to a human” and “reading a paper map.”
Translation: A major systems failure will remind travelers how dependent global travel is on fragile digital infrastructure—and how vital human support remains.
