Here are 15 more amazing travel industry predictions for 2025 by Steve Glenn

This week, I will add predictions 31-45 to my annual list of travel industry predictions. My next 15 predictions are coming next week. CLICK HERE to read my first 30 predictions.

31. Hotels will start charging a $15 Housekeeping Fee – The pandemic allowed hotels to introduce housekeeping fees, and now many are charging an additional $15 per night for daily cleaning. If you want your room cleaned every day, you’ll need to notify the front desk and pay the fee. It seems hotels have adopted Winston Churchill’s adage, “never let a crisis go to waste,” by adding these daily cleaning charges on top of the room rate. These hidden fees are frustrating for travelers, and I hope hotels will take a more transparent approach, treating guests with honesty and no additional charges.

32. Most 2025 river cruises in Europe will be sold out by March 1, 2025 – River cruising is going wild. Baby boomer Americans cant get enough of the unpack once -and-done experience. At the beginning of 2025, 67% of all Europan river cruises were already sold-out. Procrastinator beware!

33. Most people will renew their passports online this year – The U.S. government has finally launched a new online passport renewal system that most people will want to use to renew their passports in 2025. This will be a giant time saver as currently, it can take 5 – 9 weeks to get a passport renewed by sending in the forms via mail. This new process offers the possibility to shorten the renewal time by half.

34. Facial recognition will replace airline tickets and passports – Paper tickets are long gone, and soon even digital tickets and mobile boarding passes will be obsolete. The travel industry is rapidly adopting facial recognition scanners to streamline airport security. Global Entry users are already experiencing this shift, as facial scans replace the need to present passports. Many airport gates now accept just a photo ID for security clearance. While this advancement enhances convenience, it’s also a bit unsettling, as it means the government tracks your every move.

35. Baby Boomers will accelerate their travel as they try to spend down their 78 trillion dollars in wealth before they kick the bucket –Baby Boomers will take heart to the old saying, “You can’t take it with you” and accelerate the number and frequency of travel in 2025. Add to this many Boomers will also be downsizing from jumbo houses and try to simplify life with no-maintenance condos and apartments. This will free them up for even more travel.

36. Business Class and First Class airline seats are set to skyrocket in popularity among Generation X and Millennials –  As the great wealth transfer from Boomers to these generations begins to take shape, trillions of dollars are shifting into the hands of individuals eager to embrace the finer things in life. Luxury travel is at the top of their list, and these travelers are ready to upgrade their experiences, making premium airline seating a prime beneficiary of this newfound affluence.

37. Travel in 2025 is as much about storytelling as exploration –In the past year I have been to the major cities of Rome, Florence, and New York City and was miserable walking and driving with the hoards of people and cars. I don’t like crowds and feel intimidated walking like a sardine up a stream. The sidewalks in NYC and Rome are so full that you have to walk in the street to move ahead. I am not saying don’t go to these cities, however, you have to have a three-point plan that includes 1) Travel off-season and avoid holidays. 2) Rise early and hit the hot spots before 10 AM. 3) Purchase reservations for timed entry into top attractions.

38. A pandemic scare is likely to emerge somewhere in the world in 2025, but it may largely be ignored – Since 2000, there have been 11 major pandemics, typically occurring every 2–3 years. With COVID-19 hitting hard in 2020, we may be overdue for the next global health crisis. While a scare seemed plausible in 2024, history suggests the odds increase with time. Here’s a timeline of recent pandemics to consider: West Nile Virus (1999–2002), Anthrax (2001), SARS-CoV (2003), Mumps (2006), E. coli & Salmonella (2006), H1N1 (2009), Whooping Cough (2012), MERS-CoV (2012), Ebola (2014), Zika Virus (2016), and COVID-19 (2020).39. Hotels will need to decide if they are a hotel or a kennel – Dogs, Dogs, and More Dogs are on the Move in 2025 – More and more travelers will be bringing their dogs along for the ride. Last year, I was surprised by how many dogs were on the flights I took. On one flight, there were three dogs, and on another, a dog had to be removed because it was barking at another dog. The situation seems even more pronounced at some of the resorts I visit. I believe hotels will need to address this, as I felt uncomfortable with dogs sniffing guests and even fighting with one another in the hotel. While I grew up on a farm and love animals, especially dogs, I think hotels need to decide if they are a hotel or a kennel. Similarly, airlines that stopped serving peanuts due to potential allergies should consider that some people are equally allergic to dogs.40. Airport Lounge Boom – Major airlines are competing to build the biggest and best airport lounges, with many hub airports undergoing significant expansions to attract more passengers willing to pay for business-class international flights. Alongside this, standard lounges are also expanding rapidly, as airlines now promote credit cards that offer complimentary lounge access. Additionally, both AMEX and Chase Bank are investing heavily in lounge expansions to meet the growing demand.41. REAL ID Finally Becomes a Reality in 2025 – Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state-issued ID to fly within the United States. For the last five years, the US government has been threatening all the states to get ready for this. Now it appears it will happen this year. If you haven’t upgraded your ID yet, plan a visit to your state’s DMV soon. Without a REAL ID by the deadline, you’ll need another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. Don’t wait—make sure you’re travel-ready!42. The BIG 3 Airlines Chase the Big Bucks with Massive International Expansion in 2025 – The BIG 3 airlines will push forward with major international expansion in 2025, as this is where they generate the most profit. Due to their cost structures, it’s challenging for them to compete with low-cost carriers (LCCs). As a result, they are leveraging their hub-and-spoke networks to feed into their international routes, where they can offer business class services and fill hundreds of seats on large aircraft, driving profitability.43. Vacation Villas Take Center Stage in Europe in 2025 – The traditional way of traveling through Europe, hopping from hotel to hotel each day, is being replaced by the growing trend of renting a villa in a central location. Using the villa as a home base for daily excursions allows travelers to explore the area and return to the same comfortable spot each evening—no need to pack and unpack. Enjoy luxury amenities, private chefs, and personalized experiences for a fraction of the cost of a high-end hotel. Villas are especially great for families and groups of friends. While one group might explore the wineries of Umbria, Italy, the others can relax by the pool, indulge in a private massage, or simply unwind. Renting a villa offers the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation for all types of travelers. Here is the perfect Villa for you to rent in Italy this year.44. Car rental taxes can add up to 60% to the cost of renting a car – I know when you read this, many of you will shake your heads in disgust. Local city governments and airports are becoming addicted to taxing the new travelers coming to town.

45. 2025 will be the year that more people will earn free flights and Elite Airline status using credit cards than by flying – The airlines appear to be making more money selling airline miles to banks than they do flying passengers. Most of the major airlines have changed their frequent flyer programs so you can actually earn more free flights and miles using your credit card than actually flying on the airline.
