Here are Steve’s Top 11 International Travel Destinations for 2025, that should all be on your bucket list –
International travel is expected to continue to be hot in 2025. Listed below is my top 10 international travel destinations (both regions and cities) for the year ahead. Three of the destinations I have identified as (Beat the heat) destinations for those looking for cooler summer vacation alternatives.
1. Italy – Italy, is perennially atop European travel lists. I am addicted to Italy, having traveleled there 8 times in 2024. Italy is a realm of timeless beauty and cultural opulence that enchants with its captivating landscapes, historic marvels, and culinary wonders. From Venice’s romantic canals to Rome’s ancient treasures, Italy weaves a rich tapestry of history and passion. Indulge in the delights of la dolce vita with pasta, wine, and gelato. Whether wandering through Florence’s art-filled streets, hunting truffles in Umbria, relaxing on the Amalfi Coast’s beaches, or savoring Naples’ authentic pizza, Italy beckons seasoned travelers back. In 2025, the spotlight turns to Umbria, as Americans seeking an authentic Italian experience venture beyond the tourist-laden Tuscan landscape. Don’t forget 2025 is the year of Jubilee in Italy!
2. Greece – While Italy often takes the top spot for travel to Europe, Greece is where all the sizzle is in 2025. Greece is a timeless destination steeped in amazing history and culture and beckons travelers with its breathtaking landscapes, ancient ruins, and vibrant Mediterranean spirit. With its warm hospitality, golden beaches, and a myriad of islands to explore, Greece captivates the imagination of those seeking both relaxation and adventure. Whether basking in the sun-drenched islands or exploring historical marvels, Greece showcases a destination where past and present harmoniously coexist, offering a captivating and unforgettable experience for every traveler.
3. Vietnam – Vietnam offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and bustling urban energy, particularly in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). The Ha Long Bay cruise is iconic, with its dramatic limestone karsts rising out of turquoise waters, while the Mekong Delta offers a slow-paced, rural charm. Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage, delicious cuisine (especially pho and banh mi), and affordability make it a rising star in Southeast Asia. The growing popularity of eco-tourism and guided trips through national parks like Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng adds another dimension to this destination, appealing to travelers seeking both culture and outdoor adventure. I like Vietnam more than Bangkok and Singapore.
4. Scandinavia (Beat the heat) – The countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, present a tapestry of landscapes ranging from fjords and mountains to picturesque coastlines and the mesmerizing Northern Lights. Scandinavian cities, such as Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo, exude a sophisticated charm, seamlessly combining modern design with historical architecture. The heat wave of 2023 and 2024 is making travel to Scandinavia during the summer of 2025 the “in-place” to travel to avoid the summer heat of southern Europe. Book your travel to Scandinavia early as things fill up fast.
5. Portugal – I call Portugal Europe’s hidden gem, where Old World charm meets vibrant modernity. It seams like every year Portugal moves up the travel bucket list ladder in popularity. From the colorful streets of Lisbon to the golden beaches of the Algarve, travelers are drawn to enchanting alleys in Porto and the vineyard-covered hills of the Douro Valley. With a warm Mediterranean climate, friendly locals, and a blend of historic and contemporary attractions, Whether savoring port wine, enjoying Fado music, or wandering historic cobblestone streets, Portugal promises an unforgettable, authentic journey in 2025. This is also an amazing country for bikers.
6. Australia and New Zealand – The Southern Hemisphere’s dynamic duo, Australia and New Zealand, is where diverse landscapes, vibrant cultures, and thrilling adventures converge. In Australia, marvel at the Sydney Opera House, dive into the Great Barrier Reef, and venture through the rugged Outback. In New Zealand, traverse lush fjords, discover Rotorua’s geothermal wonders, and bask in the warm hospitality of Kiwi culture. From the cosmopolitan vibes of Melbourne and Auckland to pristine beaches and snow-capped mountains, these destinations promise unforgettable experiences in 2024. Plus, escape winter in the states and embrace summer down under in 2024.
7. Colombia – You are going to think I am crazy on this one, but, Colombia is rapidly emerging as a top destination in South America thanks to its vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and excellent cuisine. Cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena offer a mix of colonial architecture, rich history, and modern attractions. Colombia also boasts stunning natural beauty, from the Amazon rainforest to the pristine beaches of the Caribbean coast and the Andes mountains. The country’s improving safety and infrastructure make it an increasingly popular destination for adventurous travelers seeking an authentic and less-touristy South American experience. Plus, with the rise of “dark tourism” attractions like the infamous “Café de la Paz,” there’s also an interest in the country’s colorful and tumultuous past.
8. Japan – Japan is back in style after a COVID hiatus. From Kyoto’s cherry blossoms to Tokyo’s vibrant streets, Japan captivates travelers with diverse landscapes and cultural richness. Immerse yourself in exquisite sushi, unwind in rejuvenating Onsen hot springs, and marvel at ancient temples. Whether exploring the countryside, partaking in tea ceremonies, or exploring the innovation hubs like Osaka and Tokyo, Japan promises a captivating adventure where centuries-old rituals harmonize with cutting-edge technology for an unforgettable experience in 2025.
9. Peru –Peru is my second country in South America on this year’s list. While Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic sites on earth, Peru has a lot more to offer in 2025. With its fascinating Incan heritage, beautiful landscapes ranging from the Amazon rainforest to the Andean highlands, and vibrant cities like Cusco and Lima, Peru is a dream destination for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and foodies alike. Peru’s culinary scene, spearheaded by world-class chefs and a distinctive fusion of indigenous ingredients, is becoming a major reason for travel.
10. Kenya and Tanzania – If you have conquered Europe your next target should be Africa. One of the most thrilling trips of all time is an African safari in Kenya and Tanzania, where the majestic landscapes serve as a backdrop to iconic wildlife encounters. From the Great Migration on the Serengeti to the elephants of Amboseli, experience the awe of untamed nature. Immerse yourself in Maasai culture, staying in luxurious lodges and tented camps that blend comfort with the wild. Capture sunrise over Kilimanjaro, witness lions on the Savannah, and explore the Ngorongoro Crater. This journey promises unforgettable moments in the heart of Africa’s wilderness. I am worried that unless travelers visit Kenya and Tanzania in the next decade overtourism may overtake the natural beauty that still exists.
11. Iceland (Bonus) Iceland has been one of the most popular destinations for the past 5 years. It’s growing popularity due to its surreal landscapes and accessible adventure tourism. From the Blue Lagoon’s geothermal waters to the otherworldly landscapes of Thingvellir National Park, travelers are drawn to Iceland’s rugged natural beauty. In 2025, Iceland is becoming a major hub for eco-tourism and sustainable travel, making it perfect for eco-conscious travelers. The opportunity to witness the Northern Lights, explore volcanic terrain, or take a dip in natural hot springs makes it a year-round destination, especially for those looking to “Beat the Heat” in Europe.
