For decades, Southwest Airlines stood out as the lovable oddball of the skies—two free checked bags, no change fees, open seating, and a genuinely fun flying experience. But that Southwest is gone. In its place is a rebranded version chasing Wall Street’s approval, trading charm for revenue. With new baggage fees, assigned seating on the horizon, and the introduction of Basic Economy fares, Southwest is slowly shedding everything that made it special. The pressure from investors to boost profits has pushed the airline to look and feel like every other carrier. It’s a tough goodbye for loyal travelers who loved the freedom and simplicity Southwest once offered.

Here are 5 BIG changes coming to Southwest Airlines.

  1. End of “Bags Fly Free” Policy – After 54 years, Southwest has discontinued its hallmark “two bags fly free” policy. As of May 28, 2025, passengers are charged $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second. Exceptions apply to Business Select fares, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members (two free bags), A-List members, and Rapid Rewards Credit Card holders (one free bag). This shift aligns Southwest with other major U.S. carriers but may disappoint loyal customers who valued the airline’s generous baggage policy. This one little change is expected to bring $400 million a year into the coffers of Southwest.
  1. Transition to Assigned Seating – Southwest is phasing out its open seating model in favor of assigned seating, with implementation expected in early 2026. The new system will offer standard and premium seating options, including extra legroom seats. While this change may streamline the boarding process and cater to passengers desiring specific seat assignments, it alters the unique (cattle call) boarding experience that distinguished Southwest from its competitors.
  2. Introduction of Basic Economy Fares – Starting May 28, 2025, Southwest introduced a Basic Economy fare, replacing the “Wanna Get Away” option. This fare comes with restrictions: no free checked bags, non-changeable tickets, and flight credits that expire in six months. Additionally, passengers will receive a randomly assigned seat at check-in and will be among the last to board . This move aims to offer more competitive pricing but may reduce flexibility and comfort for budget-conscious travelers.
  3. Launch of Red-Eye Flights and International Partnerships – In February 2025, Southwest commenced its first scheduled overnight red-eye flights, enhancing travel options for long-haul passengers. Additionally, the airline entered into a partnership with Icelandair, marking its initial foray into international collaborations. These initiatives expand Southwest’s network and provide customers with more travel choices, particularly for international and cross-country routes.
  1. Enhancements to Rapid Rewards Program – Southwest has revamped its Rapid Rewards loyalty program. Customers now earn more points on Business Select fares but fewer on Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares. The airline also introduced a “Cash + Points” option, allowing members to combine points with other payment methods to book flights. These changes aim to reward higher-spending customers and provide more flexibility in redeeming points, though they may affect the value proposition for budget travelers.
These strategic shifts reflect Southwest’s efforts to adapt to evolving market dynamics and
customer preferences. While they may enhance revenue streams and operational efficiency, they also signify a departure from some of the airline’s traditional customer-centric policies.
