Steve’s list of 11 European Habits Americans could learn from –

I have spent a lot of time in Europe this year and have put together a list of things I appreciate about the European lifestyle that I think we could learn from. I also put together a list of 11 American habits that I think makes us the envy of the world.

11 European habits American could learn from

1. A More Relaxed Pace of Life –Europeans often prioritize quality of life over quantity, leading to a more leisurely pace.

2. Stronger Work-Life Balance – Many European countries have laws and cultural norms that encourage employees to prioritize their personal lives. European culture often promotes the idea of “working to live” rather than “living to work,” emphasizing quality of life, vacations, and time with family over constant work.

3. A Greater Appreciation for Public Transportation –European cities often have extensive and reliable public transportation systems, reducing reliance on cars. I love to take the train in Europe.

4. More Frequent Vacations –Europeans typically take longer and more frequent vacations, allowing for better rest and rejuvenation. Most Americans fail to even take all the paid time off they are entitled to from their jobs.

5. A Focus on Sustainability –Many European countries have made significant strides in sustainable practices, such as recycling and renewable energy. We talk about it. Europeans live it. They have to as they don’t have the natural resources that America does.

6. A Stronger Sense of Community –European neighborhoods often have a stronger sense of community, with residents knowing and supporting each other as families stay in one house for decades. In America many do not even know their neighbors. Over 20% of households change their address every year.

7.A More Casual Approach to Dining –Europeans often enjoy leisurely meals, taking time to savor their food and conversation. A 4 hour dinner in Europe is common. A 40 minute dinner in American is normal.

8.A Greater Respect for History and Culture –Europeans have a deep appreciation for their history and culture, which is often reflected in their architecture and public spaces. Americans label  an antique as something 50 years old. Europeans label an antique as something 200 years old.

9.A Greater Emphasis on Walking and Cycling –Europeans are more likely to walk or cycle for short distances, promoting physical health and reducing pollution. Most restaurants in Europe, even fast-food restaurants, don’t have a drive up window.

10.Café Culture –Countries like France and Italy are known for their leisurely café culture, where people take time to socialize and relax in outdoor cafes, emphasizing slower, meaningful social interactions. American coffee shops can’t survive without a drive thru window.

11.Siestas or Long Lunch Breaks – In Southern Europe, particularly Spain and Italy, the tradition of taking a midday break, or “siesta”, encourages relaxation, mental refreshment, and a healthy work-life balance. I love how most Italian stores close from 1 to 3 pm daily for pisolina or riposo.

Here is Steve’s list of 11 American Habits Europeans Could Learn From. I am so proud to be an American!

1. A Strong Work Ethic –
Americans are often praised for their dedication to work and their drive to succeed. We know how to put our nose to the grindstone.

2. A Focus on Innovation – The United States has a reputation for innovation and technological advancements. We are blessed to have the capital and innovation to change the world.

3. A Can-Do Attitude – Americans often have a positive and optimistic outlook, believing that challenges can be overcome. We see the horse manure and start looking for the pony.

4. A Culture of Entrepreneurship –The United States is a hub for entrepreneurship, with many successful startups and businesses. We love the “hunt” of starting new businesses.

5. A Diverse Society – The United States is a melting pot of cultures, with people from all over the world contributing to its rich tapestry. Red, or yellow, black or white, they are precious in His (our) sight.

6.A Strong Belief in Individual Freedom – Americans value individual liberty and the right to pursue their own goals. We place individual freedom above government control.

7.A Passion for Sports – Americans have a deep-rooted love for sports, which brings people together and fosters a sense of community. Plus, it is called “football” not soccer.

8.A Focus on Higher Education –  The United States has a strong higher education system, producing many talented graduates. The world looks to us to help educate their best and brightest.

9. A Culture of Philanthropy – Americans are generous philanthropists, supporting charitable causes and making a difference in their communities. Europe does not think this way as they allow government to take the lead.

10. A Love of Adventure – Americans often have a spirit of adventure and a desire to explore new places and experiences. I call this the ability to “Dream BIG dreams”.

11.Understanding that failure is simply just one step closer to success –In America it is O.K. to fail. As long as your failure is falling forward.

P.S. I love this country!
